Birth
Charlotte Randall was the daughter of William Randall and Sarah Gooding, one of a large family.
From the 1901 Census and from her death record we know Charlotte was born in Hamilton on October 12, 1845. Her obituary confirms that she was born in Hamilton. Her older brother John was born outside Hamilton in Glanford in January 1843, so the crossroads of Glanford may also be where Charlotte was actually born.
Marriage
Charlotte RANDALL (age 18, born Hamilton) married William LINDER (age 23, born England) in Woolwich on August 19, 1862. The index of Marriages in Waterloo County 1858-1869, Vol 32 adds that William was the son of William and Charlotte (nee Gallen) and that Charlotte 'Randal' was the daughter of William and Sarah (nee Gutten).

Charlotte Linder -- after 1890The marriage was also noted in the Berliner Journal newspaper on August 21, 1862.
Lucinda RANDALL, first wife of Nathan UTTLEY, was also born in Hamilton (1840) by Nathan's obituary and the 1861 Census says William LINDER (Laborer, age 23) was living with Nathan and Lucinda in Woolwich prior to his marriage. Strong evidence that Lucinda was an older sister of Charlotte.
- From the obituary of Charlotte's brother John, her birthplace was near Hamilton in Glanford Township, probably near the place of Renton Station.
- Gutten is an acceptable phonetic equivalent of Gooding.
The Census of 1871 lists Sharlet Linder, age 25, living with her husband William, age 32, and four children -- George, John, Samuel and Mary. In 1881 Charlotte is a widow living with six children -- George, John, Samuel, Mary, William and Lovina. In 1891 only Mary, William and Lovina are still living at home but sons George and Samuel each have homes nearby. By 1901 the only child still living at home is Lovina but the household has taken in a lady as a border.
By 1918 Charlotte had taken up residence with her daughter Lavina and her husband Otto Krueger at 147 Waterloo Street, Kitchener. Charlotte came as well when the Krueger family moved to 143 Queen North, Kitchener, in 1923. This was her residence until she died.
Death
We know that William died in 1881. Charlotte died at age 81 in 1926 and was buried in the St. James' Cemetery in Elmira. The Ontario Death Archive index for 1926 says that Charlotte R. LINDER died in Milverton on September 23, 1926. Milverton is a village in Perth County north-west of Elmira. The entry in the Ontario Death Archive for 1926, reference #027373, is as follows:
Name: Linder, Charlotte Randall Address: Lot 25 ????? Street, Milverton Female, English, widow Age: 81 years, 11 mo Born: Hamilton, Ont -- Oct 12, 1845 Occupation: Farmers widow Father: Do not know, England Mother: Do not know, England Informant: Charlotte Gowing, Milverton (grand-daughter) Burial: Elmira, Ontario Sept 25th, 1926 Cause: Taxanemia + epoplexy Died: Sept 23rd, 1926 ------------- Medical Name: Charlotte R. Linder Date: Sept 23rd, 1926 Cause: Taxanemia Epoplexy, Heart Failure Physician: P.L. Lye, M.D., Milverton Registered: Sept 23rd, 1926
- The middle initial R in Charlotte's name stands for Randall and not for some middle name.
It appeared that Charlotte had moved to Milverton but her obituary makes it clear that Milverton was not her permanent residence. The first obituary was written for the K-W Record on Friday Sept 24, 1926. The same obit in the past tense followed in the Milverton Sun on Thursday Sept 30. Combined, they read:

Mrs. Wm. Linder Mrs. Wm. Linder, 81, who has been residing with her daughter, Mrs. Otto Krueger, 143 North Queen St., Kitchener, passed away yesterday in Milverton at the home of her daughter, Mrs. David Gowing, following a short illness. Deceased, who before her marriage was Charlotte Randall was born in Hamilton in 1845, and came to Elmira with her parents at the age of nine. In 1861 she married Wm. Linder, who predeceased her 45 years ago. She was also predeceased by one son, John of Waterloo, four years ago. For the last 14 of the 24 years Mrs. Linder lived with her daughter, Mrs. Krueger, she was stone blind. Deprived of her sight, Mrs. Linder was prevented from attending the Methodist church of which she had been a staunch member. The loss of sight, however, did not change her from a kind and loving woman, never forgetful of the needs of others. She is survived by three sons, George and Samuel of Kitchener, and William of Wawota, Sask., two daughters, Mrs. Krueger of Kitchener and Mrs. D. Gowing of Milverton, three brothers, Jack Randall of Elmira, Samuel of Palmerston, and Joseph of Kitchener, and one sister, Mrs. George Cathrae of Elmira. She is also survived by 50 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren. The funeral will be held on Saturday afternoon at Milverton from the residence of Mr. D. Gowing conducted by Rev. G.C. Gifford of the United Church. The body will then be taken to the Union cemetery in Elmira for interment, where burial services will be conducted by Rev. H.F. Deller of Trinity United church in Kitchener. The pallbearers were Messrs. Ephraim Linder of Waterloo, James Gowing, Alex Cockwell and Stanley Ohm of Milverton, and Frank Ernst and Sam Linder Jr., of Kitchener.
---------------
- Here is even more evidence pointing to Hamilton.
- Siblings Jack, Samuel, Joseph and Mrs. George Cathrae -- but no reference to deceased sisters, only to the son John.
- I've heard the expression "stone deaf" many times but "stone blind" is a new one.
- This LINDER genealogy tree would be a big one.
Funeral Card at death of Charlotte Randall in 1926
Birth
William Linder was born on March 11, 1838, in Barsham, Suffolk. The birth was registered by his mother, Charlotte Linder (formerly Girling) and William Linder is registered as the father. The date is corroborated in the family bible of Emily E. (Walker) Linder who married his son, William Linder Jr.
In the marriage record his parents are listed as "William Linder" and "Charlotte Gallen". We now know that his mother was actually "Charlotte Girling" and that his parents were married in Barsham, Suffolk on July 23, 1835.
In the 1841 census William is listed at age 3 with the family in Barsham. Ten years later in Barsham, the 1851 census includes William as a son at age 12. The 1861 Canadian census tells us that William has emmigrated from England and he is 23 years old, working as a labourer and living at the home of Nathan and Lucinda Uttley in Elmira. Nothing is known about how or when William came to Canada.
Death
We know from the 1881 Census in the spring of that year that Charlotte had been left a widow with six children. Assessment records from Woolwich Twp show that William was still living in March of 1880. William has a headstone in St James' Cemetery, Elmira that is very eroded but it does give a partial date. The transcription of the local genealogical society reads:
Headstone with enhanced detailIN MEMORY OF
WILLIAM LINDER

Aged ?---A search of the Ontario Death Indexes for 1880 and 1881 produced the name William LINDIC whose name is a close match to LINDER. This man died in Wellesley Township on March 11, 1881:
William Linder's Headstone -- 1838-1881Name: William Lindic Date: 11th March 1881 M[ale] Age: 45 years about Occ: Laborer Where Born: ----- Cause: Fracture of the spine caused by being hit with limb of a tree Doctor: Dr. Reardon Informant: T. W. Reardon MD, Hawkesville Reg'd: 12th March 1881 Religion: not reportedThere is no doubt that this was the unfortunate end of William Linder, husband of Charlotte and father to six children still at home.
- The surname is clearly written, ending with "IC" and not "ER". There is much missing and unknown information in this death report. Either the surname was also guessed at or it was transcribed wrong as it was copied from report to report.
- The age of this man closely matches William Linder. March 11 was his birthday and he would have been 43 years old.
- William's daughter Lavina was born in Wellesley Twp two years earlier which gives credence for William Linder being around Hawkesville.
